چکیده

In the Langcang (Upper-Mekong) watershed, degraded watershed ecosystems in upland areas threaten cultivation practices, water resources, and dam development downstream. Assessment of ecosystem services and the factors that threaten them is an important first step to support watershed management. This, however, requires detailed information that is often missing in mountainous regions. To overcome this, in this paper, we adopt a decision tree approach to assess protection, biodiversity, and production services in two mountainous watersheds (Fengqing and Xiaojie) of the Lancang River Basin. Decision tree rules were built on the basis of field surveys, available references, ecosystem maps derived from remote sensing, expert knowledge, basic topographic information, and community interviews. Decision tree results showed that forest cover and agro-forestry practices contribute greatly to improved ecosystem functioning in the Fengqing Catchment compared to the Xiaojie Catchment. The results were consistent with field observations. The decision tree method proved to be a suitable and flexible tool for the rapid assessment of watershed ecosystem services, for highlighting those areas that need more in-depth research, and for guiding watershed and ecosystem management.

Effects of Topographical and Edaphic Factors on Tree Community Structure and Diversity of Subtropical Mountain Forests in the Lower Lancang River Basin

We investigated community structure and tree species diversity of six subtropical mountain forests in relation to 11 topographical and edaphic factors in Lower Lancang River Basin, Yunnan Province, China, based on a census of all trees with diameter at breast height≥5 cm in 45 0.06-ha plots. The forests were as follows: a river valley monsoon forest, semi-humid evergreen broad-leaved forest, mo...

The assessment of the habitat preferences of the River prawn (Macrobrachium nipponens) in wetland using decision tree and generalized linear model

Four sampling sites were selected in different parts of the Anzali wetland watershed to predict the habitat preferences of the river prawn (Macrobrachium nipponens). A set of abiotic variables together with the abundance of the species were monthly measured at each sampling location during the 1- year study period (2017-2018). The results of Mann-Whitney test (given the non-normal data) showed ...

Land Use Planning for Urban River Margins Based on the Green City Approach (Case study: Abshooran River of Kermanshah)

Physical development without proper planning has limited ecological capacity and the ability of natural ecosystems. Urban river structure as one of the most important ecological infrastructures in the city provides a variety of ecosystem services, including landscaping, climate change, etc. which is strongly dependent on the structure and functional status of the river. This study was conducted...

Evaluation of Freshwater Provisioning for Different Ecosystem Services in the Upper Mississippi River Basin: Current Status and Drivers

With the high demand for freshwater and its vital role in sustaining multiple ecosystem services, it is important to quantify and evaluate freshwater provisioning for various services (e.g., drinking, fisheries, recreation). Research on ecosystem services has increased recently, though relatively fewer studies apply a data driven approach to quantify freshwater provisioning for different ecosys...
